Who We Are

The Men's Center is a recovery program which follows the 12-Step model of Alcoholics Anonymous and provides housing for predominately homeless men, as well as non-medical alcohol detox and drug rehabilitation.

  • We furnish on-site housing, meals, and job assistance to men recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction. We are an affordable and safe alternative for those who wish to re-enter society as productive members.
  • Being productive by obtaining employment, if able, or by volunteering in our or other charitable programs, and by paying rent are the foundation of our program. This sets us apart from other rehabilitation programs and is key to recovery.
  • We also provide continuing support for recovering men and women through open Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and Cocaine Anonymous.
  • The Men's Center has been in operation since 1950 and was incorporated in the state of Texas as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 1958.
  • The Men's Center is conveniently located near downtown Houston on the Main Street public transportation corridor.

Our Impact
The National Council on Alcoholism estimates that one alcoholic or addict impacts an average of twenty other people. We admit 480 men and serve 630 men annually in our residential program. Since our beginning in 1950 we have served over 26,000 addicted men in our residential program; 200,000 men and women through our 12 Step meetings and sponsor relationships; and have been attributed with positively impacting more than 522,000 lives in the Houston area.

Men of all ages but some as young as 18 arrive without possessions, finances or wherewithal. We have helped these addicted men one at a time, and while each success story differs, overall they are the same. Becoming employed, developing the ability to be successful in job situations and with their fellow man, and accepting the responsibility of contributing to their own support enables these once broken men to start rebuilding their sense of self esteem.

While our residential program is currently limited to men, our other services and programs assist all men and women who desire a sober lifestyle. They include 40 open meetings week, a network of sponsors, an emergency shelter in times of natural disaster, meals for the homeless, referrals to area housing and many other supportive services.

Since 1950, we have shared our scarce resources with other homeless men and women by feeding the homeless. The Men's Center expanded this outreach program over 40 years ago, and today provides approximately 150 meals per day to the homeless who are not in our residential program. We also serve as an emergency shelter in time of natural disasters.
